Meet Michele M. Laws

CDFA, CVA, MAFF

Michele has gone through a complicated divorce herself.

During her case, many financial issues such as undisclosed out-of-state business, hidden assets, and “forgotten” accounts surfaced too late for her to benefit from these marital assets. There were many ploys engaged in during the proceedings. Some examples were stall tactics and an effort to temporarily reduce his income to distract. This forced her to deplete any savings she had. Her case took SIX years to finalize. After this long process, the judge only awarded her 18% of her marital assets! Much of this was due to the overwhelming number of issues encountered, including missed assets during the proceeding and a financial analysis was not completed prior to trial. The ex was granted 82% of the marital assets. Her divorce attorney’s ability to protect her was limited. The judge did not consider what was discovered right before trial and failed to look at the short- and long-term effect of her order while only looking at the dollar amount.

Personal Experience

The result of her divorce left her with too little money for her new beginning. This struggle did not stop her. Michele pushed through the challenging times and used her experience to help others. Therefore, her corporation Divorce Dollars & Sense was created. Michele is passionate about assisting others in evaluation of critical financial situations that are beyond the scope of a Family Law Attorney’s expertise. She empowers her clients to make the most of their lives and money. Many of her clients come to her feeling powerless, desperate, and discouraged. Michele’s goal is to give them hope in their dark situation, educate them on how to become independent and to teach them how to take control of their financial lives. She understands the importance of having a divorce team, not just legal counsel.

Education and Credentials

Since 2000, she has been helping individuals make sense of their financial changes that impact their lives. Michele is the president of Turning Point Financial Group and Divorce Dollars & Sense Corporation. She is an investment advisory representative with advisory services offered through TownSquare Capital LLC, an SEC Registered Investment Advisor. She has a degree in Business with a focus on finance. She received a certification as a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA) from the Institute for Divorce Financial Analysts, a Certified Financial Divorce Specialist (CFDS) from the Financial Divorce Association which is now merged with the Institute for Divorce (CDFA), and a Master Analyst in Financial Forensics (MAFF) with a specialized focus in matrimonial litigation and Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA) from National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts. She continues to take additional continuing education classes for family law, tax and financial matters.
